About

Hi, I am Mara Quill. I have taken about nine hundred bad photographs of my own family.

That is roughly how long it took to work out that the good ones almost never happen when everyone is standing still. I started photographing other people’s families in 2016, first in back yards around Pinecrest Valley, then on trails, beaches, kitchens and one memorable barn.

These days it is portraits, families, senior sessions and branding work for people who run their own small businesses. Still one photographer, still natural light, still on location. The only studio I own is a backdrop in the back of the car.

How I work

Four things that never change.

  • The light decides the time

Sessions start when the light is good, not when the calendar is convenient. That is usually the hour before sunset, and it is worth rearranging dinner for.

  • Nobody gets arranged

I give people something to do and somewhere to walk. The stiff frames come out in the first five minutes, then everyone forgets I am there.

  • Edited, not rebuilt

Color, contrast and the odd distraction removed. I do not slim people down, swap skies, or smooth faces into plastic.

  • One photographer, start to finish

The person you talk to on the phone is the person behind the camera and the person who edits your gallery. No second shooter you have never met.

Where I shoot

Within about twenty miles, no travel fee.

Most sessions happen in Pinecrest Valley, Alder Springs, Cedar Bench and Wren Hollow. I know which trailhead has light at seven, which park empties out after school, and which stretch of river looks better in October than July.

  • Wren Hollow

Further out is fine too. Travel past those towns is quoted before you book, never added after.
